Nutrition is on the minds of most people and organic and natural foods are more popular than ever. Many seem to think that these two are the same thing. Is there a difference between natural and organic food? Of course!
- Organic is not necessarily natural. Organic food in the USA means that the food is produced using organic means. This covers everything from fertilizers to tools. The means used need to be approved by USDA, but the standards can be different from country to country. In some parts of the world the farmers use, for example, organic fertilizers that are not accepted in the USA. This does not mean that the food contains chemicals, it just means that the foods need to fit a certain criteria to be accepted as organic and very often it’s a matter of politics and region.
- Natural food is what farms produce. Natural foods are not produced using any chemical fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, or added hormones. Everything needs to be completely natural, including the temperature and the soil. It is much more difficult to grow natural crops, because most crops are sensitive to a number of factors like weather, temperature, blight, and insects.
- Both organic and natural foods are healthy. Organic and natural foods are chemical-free and they are considerably better than processed foods. No matter where you buy them, always make sure that they adhere to the national standards of your country. Labels on the food will give you this information. In this way you can be assured of what you are eating.
