Dandelions aren’t just the pesky enemies of gardeners - some believe the dandelion herb has positive medicinal effects that can help in a number of different bodily functions. Despite not being an extremely popular mainstream supplement, it has been used in a number of different ways. Individuals use both the above-ground parts and the root to make medicine.
What exactly are the supposed benefits?
WebMD states the following, “Dandelion is used for loss of appetite, upset stomach, intestinal gas, gallstones, joint pain, muscle aches, eczema, and bruises. Dandelion is also used to increase urine production and as a laxative to increase bowel movements. It is also used as skin toner, blood tonic, and digestive tonic.”
They also provide support for the use of the herb stating that it does contain chemicals that may increase urine production and can decrease inflammation or swelling in the body.
While the scientific community is yet to back the use of dandelions to treat any ailments, the belief exists that its usage can help the liver regulate blood sugar, improve digestion of fat, and help improve the functionality of the immune system. More concrete evidence does show that the dandelion does indeed contain a number of minerals.
The herb contains Vitamin A & C, iron, vegetable protein, fain, and significant complex carbohydrates, such as those found in whole wheat foods. There’s also the belief that dandelion helps the kidney flush toxins from the body.
While still lacking concrete backing from the scientific community, there are some positive signs that dandelions could be a useful addition to your supplement regimine.
