The Diet for Diverticulitis

Diverticulitis is a more common disease in adults. It is estimated that by age 60, one third Americans will suffer from it. Diverticulitis is the formation of pouches inside the lower lining of the colon. These bulging pouches are called diverticuli.  When they become infected, they cause inflammation in the colon. This is called diverticulitis.


A person with diverticulitis will usually experience other conditions associated with diverticulitis that only worsen the condition.  These could include constipation and painful bowel movement.  Some abdominal cramps occur as a consequence of the inflammation. Internal bleeding in severe cases can eventually cause death.


The condition is usually treated with antibiotics since the inflammation is bacterial. 

The best way of preventing a serious case of diverticulitis is by eating a fiber-rich diet. Fiber softens the stool so that it is able to pass through the colon. The foods that are rich in fiber include:

  • Whole wheat bread
  • Whole grain cereals, such as oatmeal.
  • Whole wheat pasta
  • All Bran
  • Fruits, such as bananas, apples, and pears.
  • Vegetables, such as corn, squash, and broccoli.
  • Beans and legumes.

When the colon is not infected, some other stronger sources such as popcorn or other seeds are recommended. 

If you are aiming to softening your stool to prevent constipation and abdominal pain, then some liquids must be added to your diet. These liquids should be clear and with no pulp.  They may include:

  • Apple, cranberry, or grape juice
  • Gelatin
  • Broth
